The City of Toronto supports Cycling, as a sustainable mode of transportation, and we're painting new markings at intersections, like this bike box to help drivers and cyclists share the road.
This is a really, really stupid idea. Bike boxes are only appropriate for very few intersections. So would only be familiar to drivers and riders that regularly use those intersections. So most drivers and riders wouldn't know how to deal with it, leading to confusion and hard feelings and accidents. If there are numerous cyclists, they wouldn't even fit in the box. And when the light turns green, are they supposed to have a race to get into single file for the continuing bike lane? Stupid idea.
Cars are the least of my worries, it is the friggin' buses that scare that crap out of me, making me go on to the sidewalks. We need to devise a better way in getting around a bus because not all the time do we want to wait behind one of those monsters.
I've been cycling in downtown Toronto for a long time and I would feel safer making a left turn the way I usually do, the same way as cars .. from the left lane. I think that bike boxes would only serve to confuse drivers even more. When bike boxes are absent how do cyclists turn? I am already told to "get off the @#$%#@ road" a lot of the time when waiting to turn left from the left turn lane. I think bike boxes will validate that attitude, no bike box, no bike.
