Here is Steve Nguyen's promotional spot for I AM KOREAN AMERICAN, written and performed by Edward Hong.
Synopsis:
From self-hatred to fierce love, I AM KOREAN AMERICAN is a spoken poem performance about how Edward Hong came to accept his Korean American identity.
Statement from Edward Hong:
I wrote and performed this poem because I want Korean Americans across the nation to think about what their identity means to them. While it's specific to that particular identity, this poem is ultimately about the human nature and the struggles we all face when it comes to the self-hatred that can live inside all of us. It is a reminder to accept the flaws and ugliness within ourselves and turn it into something beautiful. This is what I wish to accomplish with this poem.
How IAKA is involved:
When I first heard about I AM KOREAN AMERICAN two years ago, I immediately took the opportunity to see what this project was all about. After submitting myself into the project's narrative, I looked around at the other people's profiles and became blown away by the incredibly different stories of these beautiful Korean Americans, young and old. I read stories of courage, beauty, and sheer joy as well as those of hardship and struggle as these narratives stayed with me when I made my move to Los Angeles. After finding my poetic voice here in the city of Angels, it was only a matter of time that I would combine my love for spoken poetry and for the project to create a poem that reveals my life and me coming to terms with my Korean American identity. It was therefore meant to be that the poem bears the same name as the project that it draws inspiration from.

Be happy to be who you are no matter what race you are. A Korean, Mexican, American... it does not matter. We are all living and breathing human beings who need to take life in a positive way.
