Sunday Kitchen #58 Tofu

Filmed at Silverking Soya Foods in Nelson, BC, Canada.
Thank you very much to Jeff and Mitch for having us!
It was really interesting to see how tofu is made.

If you come to Nelson, try some Silverking tofu! I'm not sure if you can buy it outside of Nelson - I forgot to ask Jeff and Mitch this.

What is nigari?

  • Whats 'Nigari'?

  • Nigari = Magnesium cloride.

Magnesium chloride is the name for the chemical compounds with the formulas MgCl2 and its various hydrates MgCl2(H2O)x.

    (from Wikipedia)

  • Now I see you have the link to Wikipedia up there. My bad.

  • No no ... I just put that in after you asked :)

  • I love tofu! awesome video! Try plain raw tofu with apple sause, it's really good!

  • Wow, I've never heard of that before. OK, I'll try it. Funny you should suggest that - the other day I made apple sauce for the first time in my life.

  • where can we buy this machines?

i really liked the way you explain the process, but i wonder having those machines, i am in mexico, glas tyo know about it, thanks,

  • Where can i find that tofu box? i'd like to have that ones, please suggest. Thank you

  • What I do find disgusting in this video is the fact, the guy in the beginning doesn't wear a shirt that cover his armpit. It is very likely who ever eats the finished product will have the essence of his b/o.

  • Yes making tofu is allot of work. It is the one food item that no matter how hard you try to justify it, it makes no sense in making homemade, when you can purchase a better quality product for very little money. I tried it a few times, and between buying the soy and nigari, all the gas wasted, and the mapower I was only able to squeeze out one block, maybe one and half at the most. It was not as fun as I thought it would be and in the end not practicle and not economical at all.

  • WallStreetYoung. I love a good steak too but you make no sense saying something made from beans is disgusting but yet the flesh and milk of another animal is not. I never understood the mindset that some people love the taste of molded cow's milk (cheese) but a cleaner food product made from a combination of beans and water you consider disgusting. That makes no sense at all. Please explain.

  • That's a lot of work!

  • This is digusting!!! Where's the beef?

  • Awesomely made video!
