The protest was organised against the autocratic dictates of the Vice Chancellor who likes to be taken as the final word on anything and everything. The students got enraged since the moves of the VC was an attack on the socially-sensitive character of JNU for which it is known and stands unique from other campuses in the country. There were basically four demands that the students union was fighting for. First and foremost, stopping the commercialisation and privatisation of the campus by allowing private players to shoot ad films and organise cultural evenings. Second, immediate doing away with 'electric metre user charges' in the upcoming Koena Hostel. The students on campus are well aware of the heinous designs of the VC and his cronies who want to levy extra charges from not just the new hostel but has a grand design of installing electric meters in every room of other hostels too. The third demand was implementing the PH and OBC reservation from the next session in JNU. The fourth and last demand which was very important for all those who wish to be a part of the JNU fraternity was scrapping off the new enhanced price (which is a 67% increase) of the Prospectus Form. This enhanced price from 120 to 200 is not a big hike for city dwellers and folks from urban centres but would certainly be a big blow to the dreams of the rural folks who work hard to make two ends meet yet muster the courage and dream to go for higher studies.
