A new study suggests that the current approach to treating peoples cholesterol is wrong. The findings, based on mathematical prediction tools, show more lives would be saved -- and more heart attacks prevented -- if doctors prescribed cholesterol-lowering statin drugs according to a patient's heart attack risk factors, rather than trying to reach a certain cholesterol target. The University of Michigan Medical School and Veterans Affairs Health System study may lead to new national guidelines on statin treatments.
