The National Aviary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is the largest aviary in the United States and was designated as America's "National" Aviary by the US Congress in 1993. First built in the 1950's, it is currently home to over 600 animals representing more than 200 species of birds from every part of the world focusing on those threatened or endangered in the wild. The National Aviary also takes part in breeding programs designed to increase the numbers of endangered birds some of which will eventually be reintroduced to the wild.
