It is only Intermodals that a 66 will be faster due to 75mph speed limit. With any class 6 or 7 freight a class 60 will accelerate faster to 60mph due to their higher power, bigger traction motors, superior traction control and of course the much lower gearing.
66's may be more fuel efficient on lighter trains, but to keep a 2000 tonne train moving they have to be constantly thrashed in notch 8 for hours and hours. This wastes a load of fuel. A class 60 can use a lower notch after a while
This was based on the judgement of life, and common sense. Dont get me wrong, 60s are good, and are better for longer trains, but only some are more fuel efficient, hence why some are in different pooled allocations, 66s are built for fast freights like intermodals. Get a 60/66 diagram and record your theory, then get back to me.
without wishing to cause an insult war, the sheds and skips have no where NEAR the same acceleration as a 60 at least up to 60mph!
Incidentally the 60's are also more fuel efficient as they do not struggle as much as the 66's - which are getting burned out on the freight that used to be hauled by 60's by which the 66's are not suitable for.
DBS lost a huge amount of freight. Unlike the 60's the 66's and 67's are leased, so storing them would cost a lot of money. That's what it's all down to
I meant 37s in general, I should have mentioned. To be honest Class 60s are nowhere near finished, but with the recession going on its just getting a bit costly for DB to run them, apposed to the more fuel and eco friendly sheds and skips, plus they are faster and have better acceleration.
And still, Class 37s are used on this and other Stobart/Malcolm related workings today when needed! This may have been filmed 6 years ago, but the tractors are still going strong! 5*
Excellent video, terrific speed with a good load !

Recorded, 6D44 Jarrow-Lindsey 66 hauled vice 60, running well over an hour late despite departing on-time and getting clear signals all the way...

How Can anyone think sheds have better acceleration than 60's - what is this judgement based on????
On a 2000 tonne freight a 60 will go from 0-60mph in about 10 minutes. A 66 will never even reach 60mph on the level!

I wouldnt exactly say they are still going strong
They have almost finished. Like the Class 60's, they have almost finished.
