It´s just a symbol of status (am i using the correct word here?) and traditional fasion in some asian countries, for example in China, (originaly i think it was becas a bit back in time it was not possible to hawe long fingernails (without broke it off sooner or later) if one had for example a field/farm job in theory)

The nails might be for scraping excess pieces away, painters sometimes have long pinkie nails to scrape off stray paint.
