@DeBruler88 There was a reason for the tone (Wikipedia explains it in detail). For me, I don't miss it because whenever I fell asleep with a TV on anywhere in the house I'd always be freaked out when the shows ended and the tone came on. Even infomercials are preferable to that.

Yeah, Back when I Had Cable, around 2AM, The Test card would come on, Then it would last for about 10 min, then it would just completely shut down.

Actually, there are still a number of stations out there today that still sign off very late in the night and then sign back very early in the morning, but it's usually only for a few hours. They will also usually add their call sign and channel number to the test card when they display the pattern. I have a few local stations that still sign off late at night. One of them displays the pattern for a few seconds and then they completely shut off their transmission until they sign on again.
