You can't drop red or green shells, period, only fire them infront or behind. Bananas will automatically drop behind you, unless you press forward, where you'll fire them infront of you.

Well 3 bananas will automatically be held behind you after you press the fire button once, and green shells and red shells will automatically circle you after pressing the fire button once. No need to hold down the button.
