Filter settings and envelopes are important in creating sounds that swell. Static (as in unchanging waves) sustains and too harsh attacks are problems you can solve with that. Better yet, if you can use an LFO to smoothly vary the filter settings during sustains.
Don't forget to put background sounds in the background, reverb and delay are great tools for pushing and instrument back, the piano part at 4:02 could have used that.

Maybe I should use more pulsating instruments...
I tried to use the effects on this remix, but I think I used them at the wrong instruments X-(
Well, I will try to remix something from a non-prime metroid for some variety.
