I've always wondered how the pedal must be used in ragtime. As pianomaster272 says, only a few of Joplin's original scores show pedal indications. However, those that have got them use it heavily, since it should be depressed for whole bars. I tend to use it for each half bar throughout the whole piece, but I don't really know anything about it. I think no pedal at all makes it sound too much like a piano roll, but I don't know whether that's how it should be. But I'm a heavy pedaller anyway ;-)

Kamibambiraptor is an old pen name: it's short for 'Kamilyon (i.e., 'Chameleon) Bambiraptor"; 'bambiraptor' is a species name for a dinosaur ancestor of T. Rex. The name was given partly by the finder of the fossils - a young girl who thought the bones reminded her of bambi. When I saw the name, I thought it so funny I used it for a pen name. Alas! No one can remember it! ('Kami' is also, by accident, Japanese for 'spirit', I believe, which I kind of like. :-) )

as far as I know Joplin marked pedal in very few of his pieces, one of which is bethena. Many ragtime composers warn against excessive speed, but pedal just doesn't really fit the entire ragtime genre- I find slight applications OK,but don't overuse it.Please explain what you mean by "tedious"...thanks for the technical compliment.I know study at peaboy preparatory

You don't even need any scholarly reference because Joplin indicated pedal in many of his scores. The evidence is right there in front of our eyes. But even when he didn't indicate pedal doesn't mean you can't use any.

Kamibambiraptor (what in the world does that mean, anyway??):
I agree that this style is tedious. The tempo seems fine, but it could use liberal amounts of pedal to bind the rough edges. It's technically good though.
This almost looks fake .
