i have to admit my ignorance, i've never seen that instrument before. is that closer to a French horn or a fluglehorn? either way, that's pretty cool tooting, coming from a violinist.

I'm not too surprised you haven't seen this horn before; they are rarely used in the United States. It's an Eb Alto Horn (In the UK they call it a Tenor Horn because they consider the Eb Cornet to be the soprano voice and the Bb Cornet the alto voice so the Eb Alto Horn is the tenor voice). It's really popular with traditional brass bands and is closely related to the modern day flugelhorn.

@TheMelloFan Actually, both the Eb soprano and the Bb cornet act as the soprano voices. You wouldn't normally have just one instrument carrying a whole soprano part for the whole piece in a full Brass Band. Then the Alto/Tenor Horns act as the alto voicing. Tenor voices are normally produced through tenor trombones and baritones. The Euphoniums switch around a lot through tenor and bass and counter melodies and more. Eb/Bb basses plus Bass trombone = bass parts. Flugel, oh Im out of characters.

@cornel999 In Brass Bands, you have the Eb Soprano Cornet, which is the soprano of the Bb cornet section. You could think of the Flugelhorn as the soprano of the Eb Tenor Horn section. I've played both, and this is the best explanation.

I started my musical hobby when I was 9 years old, started on a tenor horn like the one Owen played so well. Was never as near as good as him I switched to cornet

@cornel999 - it is indeed amazing playing (that piece would go lovely on the violin - I wonder if any one has ever tried that?) the "Tenor" horn as we call it in UK is actually an Eb alto "saxhorn" designed by guess who - Mr Sax himself - Adolphe Sax...

I own an alto horn (Yes, I'm American). I think it would be my favorite horn to play, but opportunities to play it are rare (I live in a small city that lacks a brass band), so I stick with the euphonium.
