Jamaica 1975, the heyday of roots and culture - Stanley Beckford (who basically was The Starlights) was a throwback to the old mento music, in both his vocal style and lyrics. He didn't show any American influence at all and so in a sense was the real roots sound. Soldering was a huge hit, despite being widely banned on radio for obscenity. Many other artists rushed out records in the same vein - notably I Roy with Welding and Johnny Clarke with Rebel Soldering.
Stanley unfortunately died of cancer last year, having just enjoyed a revival performing mento on tour in Europe.

  • Nice tune! I remember hearing this one played at home when growing up and asking what it meant. I never got an answer to that just silence and cut eye...lol

  • This is a classic - my days in Chalkhill Estate and Neasden High School and we giggled at it's meaning. Thank you.

  • @rayshaunmusic they basically mean the same, but that was a different time. It was simple then. Now bend over and hot fuk, are what the kids nowadays hear. SMH

  • Classic!

  • Big Tune. Thumps Up... Nuff Respect!!!

  • @c2xCr3w ("Kylie" is another way of saying "kolly weed"; the "soul" man was an "old" man in the original remark.) When the song appeared in 1975 in Kingston it was banned by the radio stations and not only became a smash hit but prompted a lot of copycat versions. Though they didn't understand the words, the Bahian crowd knew all the lyrics and sang along: the massed phonemes leveling out into credible syllables.
