The Lafayette City-Parish Council has formally accepted a $1 million state appropriation for initiatives related to converting city-parish vehicles to run on natural gas.
In an article dated August 18th, the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate reported that "the state Legislature this year approved a $1 million appropriation for city-parish government to convert vehicles to run on natural gas and to build the infrastructure needed to fuel and repair natural gas vehicles.
Lafayette and the Shreveport/Bossier City area have been at the forefront of a move to explore a fuel touted as a cheaper and cleaner-burning alternative to gasoline.
The council voted on Tuesday to accept the state money and shift it to the public works budget.
'We often talk about sending so much money to Baton Rouge, but this is an opportunity for us to get $1 million back,' said Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce President Rob Guidry, who has been working with city-parish government to promote natural-gas vehicles."
