A mile, maybe, from Parth Galen in a little glade not far from the lake he found Boromir. He was sitting with his back to a great tree, as if he was resting. But Aragorn saw that he was pierced with many black-feathered arrows; his sword was still in his hand, but it was broken near the hilt; his horn cloven in two was at his side. Many Orcs lay slain, piled all about him and at his feet.
Aragorn knelt beside him. Boromir opened his eyes and strove to speak. At last slow words came. "I tried to take the Ring from Frodo ' he said. "I am sorry. I have paid." ... "They have gone: the Halflings: the Orcs have taken them. ..." He paused and his eyes closed wearily. After a moment he spoke again.
"Farewell, Aragorn! Go to Minas Tirith and save my people! I have failed."
"No!" said Aragorn, taking his hand and kissing his brow. "You have conquered. Few have gained such a victory. Be at peace! Minas Tirith shall not fall!"
Boromir smiled.
"Which way did they go? Was Frodo there?" said Aragorn.
But Boromir did not speak again.
"Alas!" said Aragorn. "Thus passes the heir of Denethor, Lord of the Tower of Guard!

  • I think that Boromir was my favorite. Yes he tried to take the ring and would have done anything to get it. BUT he always wanted to do what was best for his people. He didnt want to go Rivendell when his father told him too. He wanted to stay and defend Gondor. But his fathers dark persuasion led him to the fellowship, and his doom. Did he do wrong in trying to take the ring yes. He always had the best intentions though. To save his people.

  • @GT12331 Yes, I do agree with you and I also like Boromir. However I think it goes further than just him being mistaken: I think, within the story, the ring power maliciously knows how to make people bend to its will for whatever reason works for them. In the case of Boromir, it's saving his city and people.

  • Some of the best acting I've ever seen on Bean's part. Few people would know how hard it is to act like your dying, coughing up blood, having trouble breathing, being in extreme pain and being ashamed and fearful at the same time....good stuff.

  • @ethongmurr Very true. That may be why the scene is so moving.

  • great libertytaking in writing, great soundtrack and brilliant performance.

  • like if you think Boromir shouldn't have died

  • Greater love hath no man than this. That he lay down his life for his friends.

  • Man tear.

  • this is the most emotional scene in LOTR... I almost drop my tear on this first time when he said: MY KING...

  • No disrespect to tolkien, but this scene was waaaay better than the one in the book!

  • "I would have followed you. My brother. My captain. My king..."

Some of the most moving lines in that trilogy.

  • Long live the Captain of Gondor,

may his strengh fail him never,

    may his reign last forever,

    first in battle,

    last in retreat

    Long live Boromir,

    even in death.

  • I think the beauty of this scene is in two things.

1: The acting. Amazing actors, both of them.

2: The honesty of it. We know that Boromir was a captain of Gondor, kind, courageous, and hopeful. He was merely twisted by the malice of the Ring. The viciousness of his character towards Frodo was not a reflection of his true intentions (I believe). Yet here we have this leader of Gondor who is completely believing "the world of men will fall." He was hopeless.
