FIRST DAY OF SUMMER (REMIX)

Watch the hi-res version and other videos at http://www.DutchAngleFilms.com . FIRST DAY OF SUMMER is the second music video I directed for THE FLY SEVILLE. This version of the song is a remix with some sweet additions by John Dragonetti of JACK DRAG and THE SUBMARINES. I shot it in high-def on the Varicam without any lighting other than bounce cards and the proverbial light in the sky. Most of the effects were homemade with the exception of some amazing work done by another videomaker Peter Sand. Peter wrote custom software (which was used for the first time outside of research in this video) that emulates a motion control camera rig. So instead of having to use a computer controlled motion control system, Peter just ran his "Video Matching" code. He also built a crane that we used to shoot out the back of a U-Haul and the whole video would look much different without his help. Thanks to everyone else in the small crew who sacrificed their weekend to help make this video. Also thanks to the residents of the community who appear throughout the video for welcoming us and making the shoot fun.

very nice work! So... you shot two approximate motion controlled shots with the crane and the software made sure the two shots lined up just right? That's phenomenal...

That's pretty much the trick. Because the camera movements were less than exact, the software uses a variety of techniques including distortion, retiming, and stabilization to simulate the motion control rig. The software is Peter Sand's doing and if you look at my favorites you can find his videos.
