Back from a Hike & Fly (with Victor) at East Lomond (WINDY!) getting some VERY nice flights along the south bank (Tayport Rd) of the River Tay, with enough memory card space left for 5 mins of video :-)

  • Out of interest Murray, .. in perfect conditions, would it be possible to attain height from a flat standing position .. say a football pitch.

  • With a reasonable breeze (1: To keep the wing overhead, 2: give you enough Airspeed to counter the 'suck' [reversal of wind] PRIOR to the thermal arriving at your location on the ground, and 3: help build the thermal at ground level.....) YES it is possible to fly up from flat ground just on a thermal lift!

NB best location is a grass area a littl downwind from a large (dark) tarmac area.

The best height I've ever personaly had in these situations would be around 50-80ft

  • @murrayhay Thanks for that info, .. i kinda guessed it was possible, .. my instructor told me it wasn't, but i thought with the right conditions, it could be achieved.
