Using IPv6 Router Solicitations and Router Advertisements, hosts on the network can learn what network they are connected to, and once they do, they can automatically configure a host ID on that network and use the router as a default gateway.

  • Why do we need periodical shouting-out of routers existence at all? Isn't it a homogeneous environment enough to trust that it isn't changing every minute.

Besides we do have the RS, RA for that and we use them when we need to despite the periodical announcements of router. I just can't imagine a situation where the automatic RA's would be useful.

Thank you for the videos - they're great. Not only from edu perspective but entertainment also. Going to look through all the IPv6 ones at least.

  • @wvdlaan1991 thank you!

The % symbol indicates the interface ID to which the link-local address is assigned. If for example, you would ping another host's link-local address, you will have to include the interface ID.

  • 8:01 "my little friend - Mr XP" xD

  • IPv6 is tha future

  • I love it that you show the Win Xp Box and the Protocol Analyzer in your videos, they really help to better understand some stuff.

What means the "%" symbol, as in "FE80::01%12" shown in the Xp's cmd prompt?
