  • The reason if was sealed up is because they are lithium cells, the government requires you to have a clean room environment with very low humidity to work with litium cells because lithium reacts violently with water. If you solder on the cells you can ruin them or drastically shorten their lifespan, you need a very small spot welder and even then it's a pretty dumb idea.

  • If you manufacture lithium cells the clean room is required. These are just about the same thing that is found is a lot of high end flashlights. Also, the reason you get the batteries with the tabs is so you can solder and not contact the battery itself.

  • 1) How did you manage to open it?

    2) Would this be the same for an original dell inspiron 1501 battery pack?

    3) What cells were they in the end?

  • 1) screw driver and a razor blade

    2) It is possible.

    3) 18650

  • did you happen to find out what cells they were dude.. i been trying to figure out what cells they are since forever and where to get them from

  • 18650

  • @dbuezas all the limiters, chips, and any other safeties can be bypassed and the charge can be sent directly to the contacts too. An interesting hack for this would be to make a battery pack that supported rechargeable modular batteries (i.e. the 1.2v NiMH or Lithium Ion) batteries aligned to the proper output specs for the laptop. Then just replace the set of batteries with a new set and recharge or even use the AC power supply to recharge them internally.

  • I did the exact opposite. I opened my Dell battery cause I needed 18650's for my new flashlight. Works awesome.

  • Dude, 18650's produce 3.3 v each, by 6 that's gonna be almost 20 v ! laptop runs with 11.1 v ! does the battery circuit actually reduce the voltage ?

  • Beware, dell batteries usually have some electronic protection to avoid you from doing that. Basically when you cut the wires the battery is useless. There is a way of reseting a chip there to make it work again, but dell also thought of that and they have some circuits that electronically limit the charge of the battery.

  • you sound depressed, CHEER up

  • did you end up replacing them? what was the mAH rating on the 18650's you used?

  • thanks :)
