Barbara Bates is a fashion designer in Chicago is working to educate the public about mandatory minimums. She recently hosted a reception in honor of her son, Kristopher Davis- who was recently sentenced to 19 years in prison on a conspiracy charge.

Kristopher Davis is the youngest son of Chicago, IL based fashion designer, Barbara Bates and businessman Michael Davis. Kristopher was recently a victim of a mandatory minimum sentence for conspiracy. Conspiracy (the INTENT to engage in a criminal act with others). He was sentenced to nineteen (19) years in a federal prison. Surely, the crime, does not fit the time. Kristopher is only one of thousands incarcerated under this law. With your help and awareness of this disparity, we can help to eliminate this law.

On March 13th, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, introduced a bill to Congress, H.R. 1466. This bill will eliminate mandatory minimum sentences and give judges the discretion to prosecute and sentence appropriately. We can make a change....Now is the time......PLEASE join FAMM and urge your congressman or state representative to be a co-sponsor of HR 1466.

Federal Judge Michael McCuskey who sentenced Kristopher said, "We had an African American Senator from the state of Illinois running for President in 2008. Not once did he say, if I win, I will change the drug laws in the United States. Nor did he say if elected President I will change the drug laws."

We are the voices that made a change and elected the first African American President. We are the same voices that can eliminate mandatory minimum sentences.
YES WE CAN!

  • mandatory minimums are awful. my friend alan is doing 10 yrs m/m due to selling rx in pill mill fla. He is an addict not a king pin and all pills 4-14 grams mm of 3 yrs and 14-28 m/m of 15 yrs & 28 or more is m/m of 30 yrs. he has a masters degree, non-violent offender. The also count the weight of the entire pill, not just the active ingredient. (ie) loritabs cut with acetomeniphem 10/500 only 10 is active ingredient but the other 500 grams of tylenol is weighed in. I am devastated.
