President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev arrived on December 9 in Geneva to attend Information Society World Summit.
At the airport President Ilham Aliyev was warmly met according to the Summit protocol by minister of Geneva canton, permanent representative of Switzerland to UN and other international organizations Jean Marc Vugari, heads of UN regional sections, Azeri Ambassador to Germany and Switzerland Huseynaga Sadygov, charge d'affairs of Azerbaijan's Permanent Mission to UN and other international organizations Murad Najafov and other officials.
Official initiative to organize Information Society World Summit was reflected in resolution 73 adopted in 1998 by World Telecommunication Union. Upon that resolution UN Coordination Board was applied to hold Information Society World Summit. The initiative was approved in the session of the Board in 1999 and it was decided to hold the Summit under patronage of UN Secretary General and leave main organizational works to World Telecommunication Union.
Visiting Geneva to attend Information Society World Summit President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met on 9 December at Palexpo Palace, where the Summit was to be held, with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in private. Views were exchanged in the meeting on integration of Azerbaijan to the world community, its active participation in UN event.
Official opening ceremony of the Summit took place on 10 December at Palexpo Palace, Geneva. Within the Summit President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev exchanged views with Estonian President Arnold Ruutel, Romanian President Ion Iliyesku, Croatian President Stipe Mesic and Iranian President Mohammad Khatami. Presidents shared visions on cooperative ties, main directions of issues of mutual concern.
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on 10 December met with Premier of Bangladesh Khalida Ziya. President Ilham Aliyev gave detailed information to Mrs Khalida Ziya Rahman on processes ongoing for last 10 years in economic development of our country. President of Azerbaijan talked of the most painful problem of country -- Armenia-Azerbaijan, Daghlig Garabagh (Nagorno-Karabakh) conflict lasting since 1988 and its painful consequences.
Head of Bangladesh government, highly valuing the interesting speech of President Ilham Aliyev in the Summit, said big investments made in Azerbaijan are result of effective activity of the government and congratulated the President on this success.
On December 10 President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with President of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev in Geneva palace Palexpo.
President Askar Akayev congratulated Ilham Aliyev on the occasion of election to the post of the head of Azeri state and expressed his conformity that he would continue political course of Heydar Aliyev. President of Kyrgyzstan reminded that in the last few years leaders of Turkic countries hadn't met very often. He said that before President Heydar Aliyev had big deserves in this work and characterized him as initiator of such meetings. President of Kyrgyzstan said Turkic world needed such leaders as Heydar Aliyev. Mr. Askar Akayev expressed his hope that President Ilham Aliyev would continue such a course.
Touching upon Daghlig Garabagh (Nagorno-Karabakh) problem, President of Kyrgyzstan said 'We recognize territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and we will be keeping this position'.
On December 10 President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with President of Republic of Macedonia Boris Traykovsky in Geneva - Palexpo palace, where Information Society World Summit was being held.
Head of Macedonia cordially congratulated President Ilham Aliyev on the occasion of election as a head of the state, as well as in connection with the substantial speech in the opening of the summit held in Geneva. He also expressed his satisfaction that he was sitting at the table with the President of Azerbaijan in the official reception organized on the same day on behalf of UN Secretary General.
