For a long time, well into the Shuttle period, NASA continued to use the sequential color system based on the rejected CBS color system of the 1950s. It produced the color breakup often seen on moving objects. It made sense to use this system back in the Apollo days, but not after cheap color CCD cameras became available. It took NASA a long time to make the switch.
