Oh the night was clear, and stars were shining
and the moon rose up, so quiet in the sky
and the people gathered 'round, and the band was tuning
I can hear them now, playin' "Coming Through the Rye"

CHORUS
and we danced all night, to the fiddle and the banjo
the driftin' tunes, seemed to fill the air
so long ago but I still remember
we fell in love, at the Roseville fair

you were dressed in blue, and you looked so lovely
just a gentle flower of a hometown girl
and you took my hand, and we stepped to the music
with a single smile, you became my world CHORUS

Well we courted well, and we courted dearly
and we rocked for hours on the front porch chair
and a year went by, since the day I met you
and I made you mine, at the Roseville Fair CHORUS

*ending same melody as chorus

So here's a song, for all you lovers
her's a tune that you can share
may you dance all night to the fiddle and the banjo
the way we did, at the Roseville Fair

  • I was surprised when I saw my friend Tommy playing with only Liam that it was because all of Liam's brothers had passed away. Tommy just never talked about and I never asked. R.I.P. both Tommy and Liam. Now they are all together now playing to a different audience or maybe some of their old fans. Fred Miles

  • I do this in this tempo, always surprises people as they expect a pacy version, but get's a great response as a ballad, lovely song

  • Mr Clancy served Irish music very well indeed. This excellent American composition is sung in the local Irish folk spirit. It would even tempt a fellow to try a cover version, with just a tiny increase in tempo.

The idea will be given some thought.

Romantic and one with which we can all associate when we were young handsome and invulnerable.
