i would like to learn to play keys and would like to self teach myself...how did you do that exactly??

Exactly? Well hard to say. I wanted to learn how to play so I just started playing. The more I understood the more I could play. The more I practiced the more I was able to do. I don't read notes but I know basic/advanced theory. Understanding how to play makes everything much easier. Learn your scales and chords and you should start off just fine.
