Boyz N the Hood is an Academy Award-nominated 1991 hood film written and directed by John Singleton. Starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Angela Bassett, Regina King, and Larry Fishburne, the film depicts life in poor South Central (now South) Los Angeles, California, and was filmed and released in the summer of 1991. It was nominated for both Best Director and Original Screenplay during the 1991 Academy Awards, making John Singleton the youngest person ever nominated for Best Director and the first African-American to be nominated for the award.

My only real qualm is the assumption that we can't control ourselves. Just because something is THERE doesn't mean you have to buy it. That goes for the liquor stores, the gun stores, the shoes, the purses, the clothes, the cars, the movies, the music, the comics, the books, the houses. ANYTHING. Just because something is AVAILABLE doesn't mean you need it. It's the same problem I have with some all-black schools removing females because they're a distraction; it's self defeatist.
