Media Relations Guide for Nonprofits

This educational video was produced for a group on nonprofit communicators in Northeast Indiana.

What is "The Media?" "The Media" means not only the traditional news outlets newspapers, radio, and TV, but also much more, including grassroots means of distribution. For example: One small nonprofit organization distributes its newsletter in grocery sacks at each grocery in their community, reaching virtually every consumer in the community with this type of marketing communication. That should be considered "The Media," too. Also included in the scope of "The Media" are online outlets such as influential blogs; a great current tactic for nonprofit communicators.

So why is Media important to you as a nonprofit communicator? Whether your market includes TV, radio and print or just one local newspaper, small nonprofit organizations are newsmakers. Your nonprofit programs and services are more relevant in today's turbulent economy than ever before. Your communication initiatives require community or political support to succeed. One way to build support for your goals is by using the media effectively as opportunities arise.

In this short video, well highlight 3 of the top tips to help you, as a non profit communicator, work well with the media.
