McNair Kaserne
McNair was then known as "The Zoo" and I thought it looked like a prison. There was a small trinkehalle across the street where you could swing by for a beer with the guys. I could find nothing on Mcnair on the internet that really talks about it. But I do remember the cobblestones that would get wet when it rained, and we would sit outside drinking and betting on which cars would slide across the street at the corner.

Höchst Germany, Frankfurt AM Main
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%B6chst_%28Frankfurt_am_Main%29

Höchst am Main became part of Frankfurt am Main in 1928 together with its boroughs Sindlingen, Unterliederbach and Zeilsheim. It is situated 10 km west of downtown Frankfurt on the north bank of the Main river at the Nidda River estuary.

In contrast to most other Stadtteile, Höchst is an old historical city (with town privileges since 1355) and is still the most important subcenter in the western part of Frankfurt. Until 1987 Höchst was the administration seat of an independent Landkreis. Höchst is now the center of the administrational district Frankfurt-West with 120,000 residents.

The name Höchst became well-known throughout the world for the chemical and pharmaceutical corporation Hoechst AG which was established in 1863. With a short interruption (1925−1952) the Hoechst AG has been headquartered in Höchst. In 1999 the company was merged with the French Rhône-Poulenc S.A. and became Aventis and subsequently after another merger Sanofi-Aventis. There are still major research and production activities of the company in Höchst.
An important cultural event is the folklore festival, the Höchster Schloßfest, that brings many visitors to Höchst. It begins in the middle of June and last four week. It includes a festival in the old city, fireworks, and a jazz festival in the castle.

  • I spent 6 weeks in 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt back in 1989 after getting my mandible (jaw) broken in The 4th Floor bar down in Sachsenhausen compliments of a fellow soldier and his beer mug. In the hospital one of my roommates, a black guy, had acquired his broken jaw via a Turkish girl's brother's baseball bat with several of his Turkish friends in attendance. So I can concur with everything you said about the fighting , the Turks and the bier. All made for some really good memories. :)

  • @exhibit500 I got my head split open in Sachsenhausen in 1986 LOL. Then in 1990 they banned the place for all soldiers.

  • "schwul" means gay. "sch" is "sh" sound, "w" is like "v" in "vast" and the "u" is spoken with a long vowel.

The common mistake is mistaking it with "schwül" which means humid.

Th "ü" sound is hardly explainable, make a long "u" and softly move over to "i" and you will come across it when you draw your lips back.

  • @Jeansschwimmer This extra money will then not get registered in the books and not taxed but go straight into the staff's pocket. The German word for that is "Trinkgeld". It is said to have been the money for coachmen and other hard working people so that they could get a refreshment if they had worked hard for you.

  • I got somewhat confused about the tip-thing he is telling about. Service is of course included as the waiter is an employee who gets paid, that's it. But if- let's say- your bill of fare comes to 23.40 € for your meal and drink you better put 26.00 onto the table and say" It's alright".

If you have had a sandwhich and one or two drinks and it comes to 7.90 € , you pay with a 10.00€ note and leave a 1 € coin on the table before you go or hand it back to the waiter when he gives you your change.

  • Your so right about the turks...
