The Great Dictator - CHARLIE CHAPLIN (1940)- (PDM)

El gran dictador (en inglés The Great Dictator) es una película estadounidense de 1940 escrita, dirigida y protagonizada por el británico Charles Chaplin. Se estrenó en Nueva York el 15 de octubre de 1940 y en Londres el 16 de diciembre de 1940. El largometraje recibió cinco nominaciones en la 13ª edición de los Premios Óscar, sin embargo no ganó ninguno.

Al final de la Primera Guerra Mundial un soldado del ejército de Tomania, al salvar la vida del oficial Schultz en su avión, sufre un accidente y pierde la memoria, permaneciendo en un hospital por 20 años. Cuando, todavía amnésico, escapa del hospital, regresa a su ciudad, donde abre de nuevo su antigua barbería ubicada en el Ghetto. Los tiempos han cambiado. El país es gobernado por el dictador Adenoid Hynkel, y existe una brutal discriminación contra los judíos.

Una de las jóvenes del Ghetto, la bella Hannah, defiende al barbero cuando es acosado por miembros de las fuerzas de seguridad de Hynkel. Ambos se enamoran y deben sufrir los atropellos de la dictadura, aunque tienen el respiro de tener la protección de Schultz, que reconoció al barbero, y de un corto periodo de paz con los judíos mientras Hynkel trata de conseguir financiamiento de un banquero judío para sus ambiciones de dominación global.

El rechazo del préstamo por parte del banquero judío motiva la reanudación de la opresión en el Ghetto, Schultz cae en desgracia por encararle su falta de humanidad al dictador y de ocultarse con los judíos. La persecución produce que el barbero y Schultz sean enviados a un campo de concentración.

The Great Dictator is a comedy film by Charlie Chaplin released in October 1940. Like most Chaplin films, he wrote, produced, and directed, in addition to starring as the lead. Having been the only Hollywood film maker to continue to make silent films well into the period of sound films, this was Chaplin's first true talking picture as well as his most commercially successful film.[1] More importantly, it was the first major feature film to bitterly satirize Nazism and Adolf Hitler.

The film begins during a battle of World War I. The protagonist is an unnamed Jewish private (Charlie Chaplin), a barber by profession, and is fighting for the Central Powers in the army of the fictional nation of Tomainia (an allusion to ptomaine poisoning), comically blundering through the trenches in combat scenes. Upon hearing a fatigued pilot pleading for help, the private attempts to rescue the exhausted officer, Commander Schultz (Reginald Gardiner). The two board Schultz's nearby airplane and fly off, escaping enemy fire in the nick of time. Schultz reveals that he is carrying important dispatches that could win the Tomainian war. However, the plane loses fuel and crashes in a marsh. They both survive, but the private suffers from memory loss. As medics arrive, Commander Schultz gives them the dispatches, but is told that the war has just ended and Tomainia lost.
