@childchewingcheese They didn't keep him because they wanted Alex to be older in the new movie, because they knew that Brendan Fraiser wasn't going to be able to keep the franchise going forever, so they wanted to find a successor who can go on and do three more of their planned films. And also, they wanted Alex to grow up and have an actual love interest and relationship, having him as a teenager with a love interest and possible wife would be strange.
Personally, I wish they kept Freddie.
