I remember having this song on a "45" and playing it over & over when I was like 7-8 years old. Just having seen this video I'm further amazed at what an incredible voice he had, and how much this song burned into my mind. Did he REALLY just die? Rest in peace, Doby my friend.

As a teenage boy I signed up for the Columbia House 8 track club and the first selection I made was Dobie Gray. I listened to Drift Away a thousand times that summer and felt like Dobie had given me the beat to free my soul... I got lost in his rock and roll and never forgot how one man's talent could make a kid's summer! His music will do that again and again. What a talent!
