A1 Locomotive Trust Limited Class A1 No: 60163 Tornado is seen whistling and hurrying eastbound through Feltham Station, on time, at the head of the Up Cathedral's Express from Weymouth to London-Victoria. The date was Wednesday 17th August 2011.
I had planned to film Tornado departing London-Victoria at 08:44 that day. I got onto Platform 2 just as the train arrived ecs and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a 67 on the front. I asked the Tornado support crew why the 67 and I was told they had no fireman available until Southampton.
I decided to go home and just popped up the platform end to say hello to Pete-OLDBOYSTEAMING who bravely continued to man his post and filmed the departure. Once I got home I felt a bit disappointed and regretted the waste of time and effort so I made up my mind to see Tornado at Feltham on the Up run.
I had previously filmed Tangmere, 48151, Britannia and Clan Line at Feltham and had not been disappointed. This was my first night shot and I am quite pleased with the result and the disappointment of the morning slipped away. I filmed from the Down platform at Feltham.
History of Feltham Station- In 1923 Feltham became a Southern Railway station as the "Big Four" came into existence and most of the pre-Grouping Companies disappeared. The next change came in 1930 when the Southern electrified services to Windsor. That ended steam's monopoly on services at Feltham.
History of the Class A1 -- In September 1948 there were 3 A1's in service. All looked like Tornado when first built. All three were in Apple Green and had an un-lipped double chimney. However unlike Tornado none had a name. As October 1948 came in that changed. British Railways named the first A1, 60114, based at King's Cross, W.P. Allen. Who is WP Allen I hear you all cry? In January 1948 the "Big Four" Railway Companies had been nationalised and the board was called the Railway Executive. The Government of the day wanted the Board to represent all the interested parties so WP Allen was the TUC representative on the British Railways Board.
