Irish language (gaeilge) march in Belfast 2008 16th February. The Irish language hasbeen in decline for over 200 years.This was principally as a result of the British rule in Ireland, whereby Irish was banned in schools and in any dealings with the state. However, ordinary people are fighting to preserve and develop the language. Education through the medium of Irish is growing despite a lack of support from the Dublin government. The reason for that growth is that ordinary parents are choosing to give their kids the gift of Irish.

Bi-lingualism is the norm on this planet. Over 60% of the world's population are bi-lingual!
Why not give your child two languages instead of one? Why not educate them in the language of our country?

Rónán Ó Snodaigh
Ceol ina treo,
Amhráinín nó dhó,
Selofaidh mé ceol ina treo,
Amhráinín nó dhó,

Cabhraigh léi,
A Dhia, ó a Dhia;
Cabhraigh léi,
Neartaigh a géaga;
Cabhraigh léi,
A Dhia, os na Déithe;
Cabhraigh léi,
Cuir torthiíar a bláthanna;
Cabhraigh léi,
A Dhia, ó a Dhia;
Cabhraigh léi,
Ionas go mbeidh sí cróga;
Cabhraigh léi,
A Dhia, os na Déithe;
Cabhraigh léi,
Bí bog léi.

Is é mo phaidrín é go leanfaidh sí léi,
Mo phaidrín é chun Dé,
Mo phaidrín é go leanfaidh sí léi
Is é mo phaidrín é go leanfaidh sí léi,
Mo phaidrín é chun Dé,
Mo phaidrín é go leanfaidh sí léi

Cabhraigh léi,
A Dhia na farrage;
Cabhraigh léi,
Tabhair braoinínde do dhoimhne di;
Cabhraigh léi,
A Dhia na sléibhte,
Cabhraigh léi,
Tabhair blúirín de do fhoighne de;
Cabhraigh léi,
A Dhia na gréine;
Cabhraigh léi,
Tabhair lasair de do thine di;
Cabhraigh léi,
A Dhia na ngaotha;
Cabhraigh léi,
Tabhair séideán de do shaoirse de;
Cabhraigh léi,
A Dhia os na Déithe;
Cabhraigh léi,
Tabhaire cúnamh di.

Is é mo phaidrín é go leanfaidh sí léi,
Mo phaidrín é chun Dé,
Mo phaidrín é go leanfaidh sí léi

Ceol ina treo,
Amhráinín nó dhó,
Seolfaidh mé ceol ina treo,
Amhráinín nó dhó.
Help Her
Translated by Rónán Ó Snodaigh

Music in her direction,
A song or two
I'll send music in her direction
A song or two.

Help her,
God o God;
Help her,
Strengthen her branches;
Help her,
God of the gods
Help her,
Put fruit on her flowers;
Help her,
God oh God
Help her,
So that she'll be brave;
Help her,
God of the gods
Help her,
Be gentle with her.

Its my prayer that she will continue;
My prayer to God,
My prayer that she will continue;
Its my prayer that she will continue;
My prayer to God,
My prayer that she will continue;

Help her,
God of the sea;
Help her,
Give her a drop of your depth;
Help her,
God of the mountains;
Help her,
Give her a crumb of your patience;
Help her,
God of the sun;
Help her,
Give her a spark from your fire;
Help her,
God of the wind;
Help her,
Give her a breath of your freedom;
Help her,
God of the Gods,
Help her,
Give her a hand.

It's my prayer that she will continue
My prayer to God
My prayer that she will continue;
It's my prayer that she will continue
My prayer to God
My prayer that she will continue;

Music in her direction,
A song or two
I'll send music in her direction
A song or two.

  • This is far more powerful than all the bombs the IRA exploded during the troubles. Refusal to accept the English language is powerful statement.

  • Its great too, there will be more people to talk to in irish of course.
