I was sitting next to Roy Haynes for the second set of this evening with his quartet at the Duc des Lombards. Here are some extracts: you can really see what he's playing...
Roy is 84 and is one of the best jazz drummers of all time. He played with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Roland Kirk, Art Pepper, Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Kenny Barron, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Bud Powell,Michel Petrucciani, Danilo Perrez,Jack Dejohnette, etc. As a natural drummer, nobody plays like him and nobody is able to.
These concert was as usual awsome: what a swing ! what a joy ! And the young musicians playing with him, Jaleel Shaw (sax), Martin Bejerano(piano), David Wong (bass) are really great in particular the pianist.

Don't hesitate and go to see him live ! And the Duc des lombards is a really nice and cool jazz club in Paris.

  • This is so great! Check the hands from around 130 to 136. Roy has a serious funk "vibe" going on in his playing always. He has to be in his 70s and still making serious music. This is really inspiring!

  • @webstercat Actually he was 83 or 84 at the moment of this video in 2008 :) !

  • None other than Mr. Snap Crackle himself. Great vid man! One of the few drummers STILL drop bombs. First Roy I heard was Bird at St. Nicks. Never heard Bird play that well since that record. They *say* that on the session with Monk, Diz, Curly and etc Bird wanted Roy instead of Buddy Rich who was dubbed *leadfoot* for his trademark 4 on the floor kick style.

I see why Bird wanted Roy! lol.

  • Thanks for this nice and interesting comment !

That is even more amazing. Everything is still there, chops, taste, memory, sound. Fresh as can be! As a senior myself that give me hope and inspiration. Roy may have some health issues but he hasn't had a "hip" replacement.

  • Wonderful!!!

    Roy forever young!!

  • Dig the Ludwig Speed King!

  • he has BARBADIAN HERITAGE-CARIBBEAN STAND UP!

  • Very chilled, lovely touch.

    GO ROY!

  • Sweet! ♫♫♫♫♫

  • Yeah, a little taste of Roys' feet and hands in the same shot.

I used to play drums (a little bit!).

You say you sat right next to Roy and watched him play! Yes i am pea-green with envy. One of the all-time greats is Roy Haynes. And you've documented how awesome this man still is in his early 80's!

    Danke!
