I'm glad they explained this. I was getting mad at people who called this fake. I've taken care of stroke patients who lose their speech, ability to chew, swallow and walk. Some of them regain their independence but there are always lingering effects from stroke. The name of this syndrome implies that people "gain" a known accent, but really they sound similar to some stroke patients I've met that are re-learning to form words.
