The main point to me is how similar cattle production is to the U.S. with feedlots and high quality English breeds. The meat quality in the counter is as good or better than in the U.S. I had a strip steak at a restaurant in Buenos Aires that was the best restaurant steak I can remember eating. The Santiago store was very proud to show the video to its customers, even the picture of the cattle in the chute getting a shot. The counter in the pictures is the premium beef. Otherwise the beef is displayed in massive amounts in very long cases. They have everything from fresh primals, portion cuts in nice vacuum packaging to MAP (Modifies Atmospheric Packaging).
Everything is labeled correctly by country of origin and likely by state or region. There is no multi-country labeling. The stores had beef from Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile. They ban beef from Hoof and Mouth regions.
They have the same problem with meat packer and retail concentration, with producers in the same weak marketing position as we are. Wal-Mart bought the second largest retailer in Chile. Their stores make our Super Wal-Marts look small. They are just beginning to destroy the main streets and independent businesses. The group that owns JUMBO, the largest food retailer, is building the tallest building in South America in Santiago. It will be 1000 feet high (The area is known for some bad earthquakes) and will cost around $600 million a monument to their exploitation of the nations resources and its producers and consumers.
this place now specializes in ground beef...
