Whenever I play this song, I keep hitting the d string on the verses making a really annoying noise and I can't seem to find a comfortable way to mute it... How do you manage not to hit it?

ok so let me get this straight
you upstroke
then you mute the strings as you slide to the next chord and play the downstroke?
im trying to learn this song but i cant get the ska strumming down. and as I said a year ago, this is really good.
