The Compass Suite - feat. Kishon Khan, James Morton, Kathryn Tickell & Alex Wilson

A documentary created by www.extraodinaire.tv The Summer Solstice of 2010 saw a premiere of an exciting new musical work commissioned by Canary Wharf in London. Directed by pianist/composer Alex Wilson, The Compass Suite takes the listener on a worldwide musical journey.

Composing the music for "North" is Kathryn Tickell, who featured on Sting's If on a Winter's Night and is steeped in Northumbrian folk music. British-Bangladeshi composer, Kishon Khan, then takes up the baton for "East" with a compelling fusion of western and Asian sounds. We then go "South" to Mali in West Africa and Alex Wilson takes us deep into the Mandingue musical tradition before sweeping across the Atlantic to some steamy, hot Afro-Cuban sounds featuring the traditional rumba group Dilanga. We finish by heading "West" for some slamming jazz-funk composed by James Morton which will include the powerful sounds of 20-strong Kinetika Bloco music troupe.

The piece comes to a climax with a grand finale featuring all the composers and musicians - this will indeed by an evening to remember.

Alex has put together a stellar seventeen-piece band to play this new work - these talented instrumentalists have accompanied Craig David, Incognito, Steve Winwood, Sting, Tom Jones, Level 42, Amy Winehouse, Pee Wee Ellis, Courtney Pine, George Michael and a myriad of other artists.
