Dozens of popular tourist beaches on Australias northeast coast were on Friday declared a disaster zone, with their once-pristine sands fouled by a massive oil and chemical slick.

Queensland states marine safety authority said up to 100 tonnes of fuel were now believed to have spilled from the Hong Kong-flagged ship Pacific Adventurer amid cyclonic conditions early on Wednesday.

  • 230 tonnes of fuel oil

    30 tonnes of other fuel

    620 tonnes ammonium nitrate

Is the official report given now for the amount of the spill. Swire Shipping will be fined only $1.5 million for the disaster. Only a dozen or so workers with rakes and shovels are cleaning. They have machines that could have stopped it from washing up but they didn't bother. What happened here?
