This is a preview of a movie featuring Nishioka Sensei teaching the Omote series of Shinto Muso Ryu Jodo.
110 minute NTSC/PAL DVD, subtitled in English, French, German, Italian, Portugese and Spanish. DVD will be released in August 2008, check www.jodojo.com for further details and ordering information. Here is a review from one of the translators:
This recording, put together by collecting material filmed during ordinary classes at Bunbukan Dojo, represents a unique occasion to learn from Nishioka Tsuneo Sensei some of the fundamental elements of the methods (gijutsu), tradition (densho) and spirit (seishin) characteristic of Shinto Muso-ryu. With the simplicity, kindness and intensity worthy of a true Master, Nishioka Sensei leads us through the kata of the Omote series, touching upon points whose importance goes well beyond the specific technique being studied, often transcending the ryu boundaries to attain universal notions of traditional Budo. -Lorenzo Trainelli.

I like it when at around 3:50 he admits he has no idea why the uchidachi turns the blade. Sometimes I get the feeling that many sensei pretend to be all-knowing and if some information has been lost they try to come up with their own explanation. I really respect if a Japanese sensei has the guts to say "I don't know".
Yes, it is not common to find that in a teacher, but he of course has some ideas. At about 4:20 he gives a possible explanation as to why... It's not subtitled in the preview but one possibility is that if Uchidachi doesn't turn the blade then Shidachi could lock the sword and throw it over his head.
