Why Was I Born?" is a 1929 song composed by Jerome Kern, with lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II.
It was written for the show Sweet Adeline (1930)
Lyrics
Why was I born
Why am I living
What do I get
What am I giving
Why do I want a thing
I daren't hope for
What can I hope for
I wish I knew
Why do I try
To draw you near me
Why do I do I cry
You never hear me
I'm a poor fool
But what can I do
Why was I born
To love you
Why do I cry
You never hear me
I'm a poor fool
But what can I do
Why was I born
To love you
this song says all of my life

Never heard of this song or the Broadway show it was written for. But what a match made in heaven: Joni's voice & the songwriting talents of Kern & Hammerstein! I greatly appreciate you sharing this rare gem with us! CHEERS!

I'll never stop wondering what inspired those lyricists of that day. What was the motivation for so many evergreens that are still with us? Kern, Hammerstein, Mercer, Ellington, the list lke the beat goes on!
