Can a DSLR fit in a Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack?

I had trouble finding a definitive answer to a question that needed answering before I selected which maxpedition versipack to buy. Which one will fit my DSLR, camcorder, flash unit and a few other things for travel? Colossus? Mongo? Jumbo?

In fact, I spoke to a couple people who said a jumbo would never work and had put the colossus in the internet shopping cart more than once before canceling. Finally I decided to take a run out to a dealer. The closest one was about 45 minutes south. 10-8 Police supply in Santa Clara has a pretty good display with many of the more common models and sizes in stock and on display.

I brought my camera and gear with me so that I could see what physically could fit and even though it was a tight squeeze, the regular jumbo versipack was a winner.

It turned out I had a cheap slr/lens case in the closet, which by itself was never low key or comfortable enough, but made an excellent liner for the camera in the versipack.

In the video I show a simple unloading and reloading of the pack.

I hope that if you've been considering a gearbag to carry your photo gear and wanted a maxpedition, that this is of some help to you.

  • Enjoyed the video. I just purchased a maxpedition gearslinger sitka bag. I am waiting on the foam insert to arrive. I hope to make a camera bag for my nikon dslr d5000. The current lowepro is filled to the max. I think the sitka will work good. I will do a video once I get it outfitted.

  • @edgybob1 Let me know when you have it up! I love using inserts. I have a Tenba insert that is perfect for a variety of packs and messenger bags. I've been mixing it up a bit depending on where I'm going and whether I'm hiking or the bag is going to sit. Thanks for the feedback and hope you love your sitka!

  • Got my hands on a used jumbo versipack, but ended up with a colossus by Maxpedition, it fits my D7000 perfectly.

  • @mytube433 nice! That D7000 looks like an awesome camera, too :) I'm torn between updating the D200 or getting an EVIL camera (for lighter packing trips)...depends on what Nikon announces next month.

  • I use the Maxpedition bags as camera bags as well, they are so much more versatile. Thanks for the video.

  • @LLauranzonIII You're welcome! :) I also find that the tenba insert makes many other bags pretty decent for carrying my camera. For the versipack, I just use the old slr case as shown.

  • Thank you so much for this video, am trying to decide between this and the Mongo for my D7000. This helps, though I may end up with both ; )
