Saxophone great Lenny Pickett sits down with the Blue Note Blogger for an interview between sets at the Blue Note Jazz Club in Manhattan, NY. Pickett, who played with Tower of Power for almost a decade and is currently the musical director of the Saturday Night Live Band, was performing with his NYU student ensemble for the Blue Note's NYU Brunch Series. www.bluenotejazz.com/blog

  • My ALL TIME favorite sax player !

  • 'ey, uniqueness, you're just like I was. I've found the TOP live in Santa Monica

with LP with 'fro & Tux. Knock yourself out, knocked me out.

  • One of my Hero's back in my High School days, this cat was the man! with the big fro and Tux. I remember play Sax in the marching band and Pep Band and trying to be hip like Lenny.

  • It might be something as simple as "A Minor Blues" if I'm not mistaken. Great chord progression, I'll say.

  • Tower Of Power, They Got Another Set At The Keystone In Berkeley. If You Plan On Making It, Tell Em' I Can't Make It Jim, I'm Just Not In Condition.

    Bobby V.

  • Thanks for sharing this. This is the kind of thing which would probably never make it to TV, but is great to have on YouTube.

  • Thanks!

Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything on google. :(

  • It's called "Closing Theme: A Waltz in 'A'." It was written back in the birth years of SNL (can't remember which year) by none other than Howard Shore (LOTR composer, and I believe the first musical director of SNL). There used to be a site with a picture of the original hand written music with notes to the different players, kind of neat to see if you can find it.

  • Does anyone know the name of the song they play at the end every SNL shows? The saxophone part is so good.

  • "East Bay Grease" is one of the greatest albums ever made. "Thought I'd sleep in the park last night". This guy must have some terrific memories.
