Seneca Menard, Lead Technical Designer at id Software, talks to Luxology about the titles he has worked on (Quake III Arena, Doom 3 and most recently Rage and Doom 4) and the different areas he has worked in, including characters, lighting, textures, map objects, level designs, game play and scripting. He explains why he likes to use modo for game level design and mentions some of his favorite tips and tricks:

"We at id have been using modo since day one, most recently using it for the majority of the work on Rage and Doom 4. We use it not only for the majority of the models being used in the game, but also for the majority of the levels as well, because we really enjoy the precise control we get over our level work that would just be impossible to do with only brushes or modular models."

  • Sounds like he's talking underwater with a mouthful of marbles.

  • Nice guy, thanks for your nice scripts Seneca !

However the vid is a little bit poor and we were expecting better insight of how seneca use modo

And please avoid this AWEFULL music !!!

  • @RAMBOxBEAST Ah yes. heh. This was before The Darkness game existed (2004/2005)

  • @captainjeremy thanks, never heard of it. i guess they couldn't have released it as "Darkness", because "The Darkness" already exists. looking forward to rage and doom 4.

  • @RAMBOxBEAST Darkness. They have said in interviews there was a game called Darkness they worked on between doom and rage that got cancelled.

  • So cool, such an awesome workflow

  • the rage behind the scenes vids from bethesda showed a little bit of modo action, but not that much and i was hoping seneca would show atleast something interesting...

  • 0:25 worked on what? darkness/doctors? o.O tips for the future: better audio & video quality. no distracting bg music. more modo, less rage & show his whole workspace!

  • Seneca is the man. Thanks for this interview.
