  • Garbo said she favored the German version over the English one. If you watch both, you can see big differences in the way she portrays Anna.

  • Sorry but Marie Dressler is a much funnier and more convincing drunk than Salka Viertel :P

  • Jack- Makes sense. She had better command of German than English.

  • Nobeester you are SO right! But even today, we are very uptight about sexuality here. Greta looks more like a former whore here than she did in the American version (Look at the makeup, I mean come on). Whereas in the US version, she's dressed like a "normal" citizen. Having said that, the German doesn't quite fit the storyline- she says she's come from Minnesota and what are the chances of one a)speaking german in minnesota, wandering into a random bar in NY and finding another german speaker?

  • @ClareBElsey:I read that she insisted herself on doing the synchro in German+also must admit that she learned it so well during her one year stay in the film studios Babelsberg in the silent movie era -i can hear no Swedish accent but rather a North German Saxon slight accent many North Germans can have when they turn to high German language.I didn´t even know the movie before+watched it all just before on first German public channel after"Queen Christine"was shown - her unsurpassed master role.

  • @jack887 definitely, she looks more assertive int hit one than the english one... and even though I understand her swedish accent perfectly, the german sounds more natural... next time I am told off for speaking german with a nordic lilt, and told "you can't" I will say "yes I can, and have seen it... it's fine, really!" ;)

BUT EVEN UNDERSTANDING THE ENGLISH ONE I WAS LIKE... WHA...?! =S

(they should have let her do more in german... )

  • This is...oddly amusing. Wouldn't mind seeing the whole thing on DVD or somethin.

  • She was sooooo talented- what an inspiration!! :)

  • What about the whole movie ;) ???

  • I don't speak a word of German but I prefer the German version over the American. The Europeans weren't as squeamish about portraying people more realistically than Hollywood did. If you played a whore, you looked and sounded like a whore, not like a repentant sinner from a revival meeting.

  • Driken Sie mit?

    Ja! <3
