    To be totally honest with you, American English is not an amalgam of many other languages! The accents are different here and there and everywhere but as far as "Standard American English" is concerned-ie CNN, Fox News, NBC, etc. The "unofficial" American accent seems to be very clear. Like the kind of accent you hear in Canada almost everywhere. But I agree that it is complicated. English. But German is also quite difficult for an English person!

    It's the French influence in the language. England (as many folks know) was in French hands hundreds of years ago and the English language changed from being 100% Germanic to something in between Germanic and Romanic but English is still considered a Germanic language. It's complicated though. I'm amazed that so many people in Europe speak the language so well. It's amazing really. Especially in Germany!!! And Holland as well of course.
