Hey Dad Nice plane i remember when u started building it. xx

1. Santos Dumont's 14 bis had no lateral control therefore control powered flight for him in those early days was ego driven dreams.
2. Sir Lawrence Hargraves from
Australia did wonderful research and broke new ground with box kites conpressed air engines and aviation thinking.

To Rogerpenna, on my sons account i respond to comments. My name is Eric Hayden, and i built the Wright Flyer Replica which sucessfully flew in front of a crowd of 16,000 people in the presents of Buzz Aldrin and Government Ministers on the 1st of October 2005. Having researched the beginnings of aviation worldwide for the last 15 years i am now considered a world authority on the Wright Brothers and the controversy which surrounded those very confusing early days of flight.

Vlatu-Lateral control was essential to turn, and whether using warp or aileron, the idea is to present different angles of attack, one positive, one negative, along the wing to induce roll. This system could be used in conjunction with rudder, however it is better if it is not. Very early patents for ailerons, were used for directional control, using the surfaces as drag brakes, to induce a turn, this is COMPLETELY different and should be noted. The Wrights system was revolutionary.

vlatu-My opinion of Curtiss is less than respectable, he was a thief and he knew it, he did not want to pay for the license that he should have. Both Curtiss and Wright worked on the terms for many years and Curtiss backed out.Curtiss also was part of the group at the Smithsonian who reworked the aerodrome to discredit the Wrights and their patents. The Wrights offered him use of their system free for experimentation, $100, per machine for exibition, $1000 per machine for sale.

warp, I mentioned Dumont and his "Demoiselle", push view all coments below. I mentioned other pioneers because they also deserve credit(like Ader,Hargrave, Lilienthal, Chanute, Herring,Wrights,Voisin,Farman,
Bleriot and Curtiss)for the development of aviation. About the patent, the Wrights sent a warning to Curtiss but his aircraft didn't use a wing-warping system like the Wrights' for control. -
Vlatu-I am mentioning Dumont and you are speaking of Voisin and their achievements? I am mentioning the practical nature of the wrights pursuit and you bring in Farman? The facts are clear and from my perspective I feel that Bleriot deserves honorable mention as well as Ader. The Bleriot II is my favorite. After 1908, the patent battles began, and Wilbur devoted most of his time to this, unfortunately he would die a few years later and Orville would sell his interest in the company.

Vlatu-You are jumping all over the place, aren't we talking about the 1903 flight, and wasn't my question what is the difference? The wing doesn't know the difference, it is relative, it worked, it was practical for the reasons I have mentioned, and yet Dumont supporters cry foul, Dumont supports claim that 1903 had a catapult, that with a catapult even a brick can fly. But the real reason is still just a matter of practicality, not a matter of false justification as Dumont supports claim.
I take it you are referring to the original flight in 1903. ther is and will always be controversy over who actually flew a powered aircraft first it may have been a frenchman. but also it may have been a new zealander or an aussie. also the famous phto of the wright flyer in action on it's first flight may have been taken several years later as cameras in 1903 could not take photos of moving objects.

It is possibly just the angle and the camera.
also the engine from Hillman Imp had only just finished being hastely rebuilt after a piston failure the day before. it has since flown complete circuts. sadly the pilot Col Pay was recently killed in an accident.
