First appered in 2001 in a time when player played games like Quake, Half Life, Rainbow Six, few monts later first Medall of Honor came out.

The game is base on a engine called Real Virtuality 1 and was made by BIS team (Bohemia interactive studio, same team that made VBS (virtual battle station,
used by armyes to train they'soldiers), ARMA and ARMA 2 seqals to OFP CWC)

The graphics in Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis are pretty mediocre for that time as it is difficult to make stunning graphic for a huge
game with a 3D world over 20 square km
The game has a easy to use mission editor that suports 63 Groups for each side (12 units per group and there are 3 sides "west","east","resistance" in total 2268
units on a battlefield) not bad for an fps game

In 2001 System requirements for this game were
800 MHz CPU, 128 MB RAM, 32 MB video card RAM, 8X CD-ROM drive, DirectX 7.0, 450 MB available hard disk space, Windows 95
But with the expansion "Resistance"

Like Ghost Recon and the Rainbow 6/Rogue Spear series, Operation Flashpoint features sophisticated team tactics that test your brain as much as your trigger finger.
At the same time, the game's focus on realistic weaponry, should please military buffs and perhaps wargamers since the game is arguably as
much a realistic sim as it is a shooter. Best of all, Operation Flashpoint offers one of the most believable and immersive virtual worlds at the time

Don't expect a hard-core tank or flight sim here as the game focuses more on a Battlefield Sim

Operation Flashpoint's focus on realistic weapons and vehicles helps create exciting gameplay since it blends realism, diversity,
and, frankly, lots of big cool guns. As an infantryman, you'll get to blast the enemy with M16 and AK74 rifles, the M60 machine gun,
hand grenades, M21 and Dragunov sniper rifles, satchel charges, rocket launchers, and many others. If you don't like the weapon you're assigned,
you can always pick up new ones from fallen soldiers, whether friend or foe.

Operation Flashpoint offers one of the biggest selections of vehicles
yet found in a shooter. You get to ride in or pilot a dozen of helicopters alone, including the Cobra, Apache, Blackhawk, Chinook, and Russian Mi-17 and Hind.
Then there are ground attack planes like the A-10 Thunderbolt (aka "Warthog") and the SU25 Frogfoot, an assortment of trucks and jeeps,
M113 and BMP-1 armored personnel carriers, the M1A1 Abrams tank, Russian T72 and T80 tanks, and more.
Operation Flashpoint does justice to it with complex gameplay coupled with a huge and truly memorable gameworld.

In campagne you will play with 4 characters:

David Armstrong - A determined Private in the United States Army who is training on Malden when the fighting breaks out, he lost his squad on Everon after a botched retreat attempt. Due to his performance, Blake promotes him to Lieutenant and assigns him to frontline combat, spearheading NATO advances

Robert Hammer - An inexperienced tank commander who has been called into service due to a shortage of tank crews. He is eventually promoted to platoon commander

Sam Nichols - A Black Hawk pilot who is called on to fly helicopter gunships, and eventually an A-10 Thunderbolt.

James Gastovski - A retired U.S. Special Forces soldier, Gastovski is called out of retirement to carry out sabotage and scouting missions. He is also a huge fan of the James Bond movies

Operation Flashpoint has won critical acclaim for its realism of simulating military conflict situations on PC, even to the extent where the game's
technology has been adapted for real soldiers to use as a special combat training application VBS1.

  • 10 years since this game. Now it's name has been changed to ArmA Cold War Assault.

  • @501stadvisor heheh yeah...i hate Codemaster for making some new arcade noobi game and taking the name Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising!!!

Now a lot of people associate the Old 2001 Operation Flashpoint to the 2009 Operation Flashpoint thinking it is a sequel to the First OFP...marketing shit

    They are two different games

  • this game has the best campaigns ever!!! if they took these campaigns and exported em to ARMA 3, it would be fucking amazing!!! I mean, i actually almost cried at the end of the main campaign, and the resistance one!!!! =)

  • @daraofp Indeed, you are correct. I myself though years ago that OFP 2 will be a sequel, when it came out I played it and said to myself what the fuck kind of a shit sequel is that with no 3rd person and mission editor being completely different and other issues as well. I heard about ArmA but I thought it's a completely different game. I was wrong. Now I play ArmA 2 and have lots of fun. Operation flashpoint and ArmA 2will always be my favorite games. Bohemia Interactive we love you!!!
