Messiaen Fantaisie LA premiere Jacaranda Messiaen Centenary

On Saturday, April 26, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica, Paul Festa, violin, and Steven Vanhauwaert, piano, gave the LA premiere performance of the FANTAISIE (1933) by Olivier Messiaen. As part of its season-long Messiaen Centenary observance "The OM Century," Jacaranda: Music at the Edge of Santa Monica presented the FANTAISIE premiere, performances by Mark Alan Hilt of Messiaen's organ music, and the LA premiere screening of Paul Festa's Messiaen film APPARITION OF THE ETERNAL CHURCH. The score has the opening Vif (quarter = 108). Steven and I have it marginally faster here, about 112. C is marked "Un peu moins vif mais tres passione," with a marking of eighth = 80. That metronome marking makes no sense - it's not "un peu moins vif" but more than twice as slow. The only plausible explanation is that OM meant quarter = 80 (compare Un reflet dans le vent). Most importantly, I've performed the piece the way it's printed and it just doesn't come off. Quarter = 80! C'est tout!

ah so the opening of this is also the second movemnt of l'ascention. he did recylce a few bits of muisc. the water at its hightest tide for ondes martot was the 5th move. of the quartet for the end of time. and the 11th move. of des canyons was alos used in eclaisrs sur dela.
