I talk about the recent films by three of my favorite directors, each of which I've devoted a series to.

Haywire, directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender and Channing Tatum.

Hugo, directed by Martin Scorcese, starring Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Ben Kingsley and Sacha Baron Cohen.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, directed by David Fincher, starring Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgaard, Robin Wright and Joley Richardson.

  • As for Girl,I had the same experience. After watching the Swedish version,(I never read the books sadly)I never really felt the need to watch to a remake.David Fincher really is a bar-raiser for the standards of creative and genre defining film making.I was disappointed that he had resorted to making a remake of an already incredible film that needed not be rehashed.Have you seen any other Swedish films? They are really up and coming with some great films.

  • @rowanmunro I think Let the Right One in is Swedish. That's a terrific movie, also made my top ten for that year. It already has an English remake, of course...I won't see it.

Technically Fincher's film is not a remake, it's another adaptation of the book. But it might as well be, don't you think?

Thanks for all your great comments.

  • @CineRam really defeats the purpose of sharing our insights and passions for movies when our words go unnoticed. So thanks again for being a GREAT host and keep up with the interesting videos.

  • @rowanmunro - You're welcome, my pleasure!

  • I think that when as an action junkie, one likes to have the whole package. The score as you have mentioned, pacing, fast paced editing etc...things that make us the staple of the genre.Steven Soderbergh is more of a slow paced, dialogue driven director.I think that this is not his genre, and the fact that he has a supporting cast whose talents outweighs the performance of the main actress makes it unbalanced viewing.I think this is where he compensates for the second half as you have mentioned.

  • @rowanmunro - Action/thriller may not be Sodebergh's genre, but it's nice to see him try new things, or put his own spin on something standard. I thought Gina Carano was just fine in the part...not so stiff as to be distracting.

  • @CineRam Hmm..this is a very good starting platform for her career having worked with Steven Soderbergh.I shouldn't be too hard on her as it is her first gig,so it will be interesting to see where she goes from here.

  • @CineRam You are right,I saw the remake and thats when I realised that its no use watching the remakes..they offer nothing new.Its difficult to say,but you are right.I never thought of it that way. This is based on a book and not on a screenplay..so it is an adaptation. Thanks for clearing that.Hope I don't go off track here, but its nice to ACTUALLY communicate with a video host.I have unsubscribed from the big names as they have become so big, they dont have time or the capacity to respond. It

  • Totally agree with your thoughts.

  • Haywire-I agree that maybe that last fight should have had some music. Nothing dramatic, but kind of breezy, jazzy, and fun like most of the score was. Its no The Limey.

Hugo-solid first hour, but significantly stronger 2nd hour. Some pacing issues.

The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo-never saw the original flick or read the book. For a 2 hour and 40 minute flick its really well paced and entertaining. Still I think it lacks that something special that the best Fincher flicks have.
